Acute myocardial infarction

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a serious cardiac event leading to death or disablement.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a serious cardiac event leading to death or disablement. The patients are suffering from severe chest pain, anxiety and often shortness of breath.

A sudden decrease/stop in blood flow to the cardiac muscle induces inflammatory activities in the area and put an area of the heart muscle under metabolic stress, which causes development of severe tissue damages.

Re-establishing the arterial blood flow (reperfusion) by angioplasty (mechanically widening the artery by balloon angioplasty followed by stenting) with concomitant medication (primarily antiplatelet drugs) has shown to be beneficial for the clinical outcome.

However, improvement of treatment algorithm with additional beneficial pharmacological compounds is highly needed. Especially, compounds having an effect on the inflammatory processes during and after reperfusion are requested.
